Taunton Racecourse is preparing to take a small step into the
unknown when it holds its first ever Sunday
meeting at 2.10 on 25th March.
The entire day is being geared towards providing fun and excitement
for the whole family. So as well as perhaps introducing the
thrill of National Hunt racing to many who might be sampling
the experience for the first time, (you can follow all the
action on the track on the Big Screen), there will also be
plenty of opportunities to keep everyone entertained. The
centre course bar will be open for the day with a Tote betting
facility and will also house a mechanical horse for everyone
to try out their riding skills. Elsewhere you’ll find
a bouncy castle, an inflatable goal, courtesy of Taunton Town
FC, to help refine your scoring prowess, as well as trade
stands and refreshment areas. In the weeks leading up to the
event local primary schools have been involved in a competition
to design a race card cover, and the winning entry will be
used on the day. There’s also a special advance “Family
Ticket” available for just £16. The package includes
2 Tattersalls Enclosure badges, 2 Tote betting vouchers, with
all accompanied children admitted free of charge. Details
can be found at www.southwest-racing.com
or by application through the Racecourse office.
Then, of course, there’s the racing, and a thrilling
card has been lined up on which the main attraction is the
Class 3 Orchard Portman Novices’ Handicap Hurdle, the
3rd of the afternoon and going over 3 miles for a prize pot
of £14,000. Appropriately enough the meeting opens with
The Clocks Forward Juvenile Maiden Hurdle, and is followed,
in case you may have forgotten, by The British Summer Time
Beginners’ Steeple Chase. Look out, too, for The Independent
Courses Agency Company Handicap Steeple Chase which will attract
the stayers for its extended three and a half mile journey.
Sunday racing should draw a substantial crowd. So it might
be good advice to try to arrive early to avoid possible congestion,
or certainly to think about using the FREE race day bus which
will leave the railway station at 1.10 and the bus station
at 1.20, making the return journey 30 minutes after the last
race. In any event, be prepared for a terrific family fun
day at Taunton on Sunday 25th March.
