Salisbury Racecourse is one of England's oldest racecourses
with racing taking place on the picturesque downland since the
16th Century.
Salisbury is famous for two American-breds, Mill
Reef and Steve Cauthen. Mill Reef made his racecourse debut
at the Wiltshire
track and went on to have an unparalleled career with victories
in the Derby, Eclipse, King George and the Arc.
Cauthen, the
Kentucky Kid, was already a superstar in the States when be
made his British debut on this course on a foul, rain-lashed
day in 1979. But his first ride Marquee Universal was a winner
and he never looked-back, winning the jockey's championship
three times.
Racing has been taking place at Salisbury since the
sixteenth century and over the years, it has become a popular
course for
punters, race enthusiasts, local businesses and those attached
to racing such as owners and trainers.
The feature race this
season is the £60,000 Group 3 'totesport
Sovereign Stakes' run on the Thursday meeting in mid-August.
The one mile event for 3 year olds colts and geldings has been
won by Prior Lodge and Passing Glance in recent years.
