The last racing fixture (March 19th) at Wincanton Racecourse saw a family win in the feature race of the day, the Elite Racing Novice’s Hurdle, as Joe Tizzard rode Nougat Dae L’isle, trained by his father Colin Tizzard, to a comfortable success. Local trainer Paul Nicholls also saw success as I’msingingtheblues landed the last race of the day.

As Wincanton Racecourse looks forward to it’s April 5th meeting, the Course are celebrating after the ROA (Racehorse Owners Association) has confirmed they will retain the coveted ‘Gold Standard’ award for the next 12 months. The award recognises racecourses who attain the highest standards for owners and the welfare of their horses, as well as the staff who look after them. This is the second time Wincanton Racecourse have won the Standard, last year they were the first course to be presented with ROA Gold Standard.

The April 5th fixture marks the start of the long Easter weekend, and with a six strong race card it offers an afternoon of quality, competitive racing. The feature race of the day is the Axminster Carpets Somerset National Handicap Steeple Chase, which has a prize fund of £20,000 and is to be run over three miles and four furlongs. The remaining five races bring the total prize fund up to £43,000 for the day. Axminster Carpets are long time supporters of the course, likewise RK Harrison who are sponsoring the Hunter Chase and have also supported the amateur races at Wincanton for a number of years.

Steven Clarke, Managing Director of Wincanton Racecourse, said: “Our regular Thursday race days attract a loyal crowd and at this Easter meeting we’re not only looking forward to welcoming our regulars, but hopefully also those racing fans able to start the long Easter weekend early and enjoy a good race card at Wincanton.

We are absolutely delighted to receive the ROA Gold Standard for a second year running – it is a great recognition for the high standard of facilities and services we constantly aim to provide to owners, horses and stable staff when visiting the Course.”

The gates open at 12 noon, with the first race at 2.20 pm and the last race at 4.20 pm

Prices on the day begin at £6, although advance bookings can be made at a discounted price on 08700 115007. Entry for under 16's is free and there is plenty of parking free of charge within the grounds.
